It’d been so long since I traded with Spiff (almost seven years?!) that when we made a trade at The Bench and he pointed out that we’d traded before in the past, I had to do a little research. Sure enough, I’ve done business with the proprietor of the Texas Rangers Cards blog twice. Really, shame on me for not visiting some of the other card collecting bloggers more often.
With our PWE trade, Spiff sent an exemplary package; besides the three Holiday Topps cards I needed, he used in a recycled penny sleeve with a ridiculously high price sticker still on it, within a recycled yellowed top loader (one with scotch tape residue is also considered acceptable), and masking tape instead of scotch tape sealing the top. I personally use blue painters tape, but either way, it leaves the toploader in great shape to turn around on another trade, unlike the gummy transparent stuff. Well done, Spiff!
Additionally, here are a few more of my recent pickups:

I’m a big fan of My Cardboard Mistress, and have had a few trades with Spankee, but this latest package has me scratching my head, and worried about Spankee’s sanity.
Here’s what I mean…well, wait, first some of the cards he sent that I needed:
clockwise, from top left: 2008 Upper Deck A Piece of History Box Score Memories #BSM-34 Joe Mauer [345/699]; 2002 Donruss Champions Statistical Champs #SC-24 Torii Hunter [018/250] (jersey); 2008 Upper Deck Yankee Stadium Legacy #3326 Tony Kubek; 2011 Topps Allen & Ginter Ginter back mini #128 Michael Cuddyer
Now, really, what was he thinking?! Not long ago I sent him a make-good package with several Michael Cuddyer cards that I’d accumulated over the months. He didn’t have to send me anything, but let’s look at the evidence…
- I sent him about a couple dozen Michael Cuddyer cards, and what does he send me back? A Michael Cuddyer card
- A s#’d Joe Mauer card? Play at the Plate kills for these.
- A jersey card! Torii Hunter!! (There is no “I” in team, but there are two in “Torii”) And s#’d 018/250 — eighteen is Torii’s uniform number, if you cover up part of the four! And it’s Donruss; they don’t make those anymore.
- Yankee Stadium Legacy vs. the Twins: this was one of their 102 1965 wins!
No, these cards were uncalled for, and I have the feeling that he might just send cards like these to other bloggers as well unless he can be stopped, or at least slowed down. My plan is to try and come up with some cards that he might like, and then confuse him by proposing a trade. It just. Might. Work. Will you join me in this effort?
Thanks Spankee. Thanks a lot.
My work takes me to Omaha frequently, for a couple days at a time. The last couple of trips, it seems like all the pending trade packages arrive while I’m out of town, and I joke with Mo that she needs to take the wheelbarrow out to the mailbox with her. Well this week was no different.
I came home to FIVE packages; a couple quickie trades of 2-3 cards, one trade of a couple dozen cards each, another about the same size (which I’m in the midst of completing my return package), and one very large package totally unexpected. Here are the first three:
Well, I made it home from Omaha, finally, thanks to successfully choosing the right alternative flight home, and St. Louis post-sleet wasn’t in too bad a shape. While I was away, FIVE trade packages arrived! Time to start unloading the blog trade post logjam…
A while back, at the same time that I was working out a trade of a slew of UD 20th Anniversary cards to Daily Dimwit, I also had a slew of A&G singles to trade to My Cardboard Mistress but had hit a stalemate when I didn’t have something comparable to trade for a Mauer jersey card he had, and on a whim I asked Dimwit if he had something to offer instead. When it turned out he did, we had ourselves a full-blown three-way trade again, just like that.
