An Excellent Heinie And Another Slew Of Lew

You never know what will happen when you simply drop a comment at a blog, but if the blog is Number 5 Type Collection, and it’s a contest post like Matthew’s Fourth Anniversary HOF Contest, well, you may already be a winner!

Not only did I win the Heinie Manush card below, but he included a nice upgrade for my ’73 Kaat!

1973 Topps #530 Jim Kaat; 1961 Fleer #57 Heinie Manush

Thanks, and congrats again on the four years!

I’m not a Lew Ford “supercollector” by any stretch, but I tend to be more on the lookout for his cards when I’m bored and I scan eBay in the evenings. Here are a few picked up at reasonable prices over the past couple weeks:

clockwise, from top left: 2005 Donruss Signature Series INKcredible #IS-31 Lew Ford/Jason Kubel (dual auto); 2005 Fleer National Pastime Signature Swings Gold #SS-LF Lew Ford [104/190] (auto); 2005 Donruss Diamond Kings Bronze #132 Lew Ford [106/200] (jersey&bat), 2005 Fleer Playoff Prestige Xtra Bases Purple #90 Lew Ford [09/50] (auto)

Regifting

Had my name on the Twins radio broadcast last Friday night for the second time this season with another correct answer emailed in to the trivia question of the game.
Q: Since 1961, players from the Twins and Reds have won 14 MVP awards — who were the players?
A: Bench, F. Robinson, Mauer, Morneau, Killebrew, Versalles, Rose, Morgan, Foster, Carew, Larkin, Votto

I haven’t been posting as much recently, because I’ve been “pounding the pavement” over at The Bench. I originally registered there in order to make a trade offer to someone, and while that person has never responded 😉 I have several cool trades in the works there.

Meanwhile, Astros trading buddy Daily Dimwit had some Twins cards picked up as his second team in a recent break, and he knew where to get rid of them. With the swap, I picked up these:

clockwise, from top: 2006 Upper Deck Artifacts MLB Game-Used Apparel #MLB-SB Scott Baker [208/325] (jersey); 2008 Topps Co-Signers Silver Blue #26 Justin Morneau (w/Michael Cuddyer) [025/250]; 2008 Topps Co-Signers #16 Joe Mauer

Thanks Dimmy!

Quality Merchandise

I try not to dip into eBay much, as it could easily get in the way of my card collecting’s requisite spousal approval, but with some overtime here and there, I don’t mind browsing for something inexpensive. This past week or so, I lucked into some excellent cards at very reasonable prices. In addition, the bottom card was saved for me from my LCS owner, bless him.

clockwise, from top left: 2007 Upper Deck Premier Rare Remnants Triple Gold #RR3-SJZ Johan Santana w/Johnson,Zito [25/25] (jersey); 2003 Topps All-Time Fan Favorites Relics #FFR-RCA Rod Carew (bat); 2002 Upper Deck Sweet Spot USA #USA-JM Joe Mauer (jersey); 2012 Topps Golden Moments #GMA-LH Liam Hendriks (auto); 2004 Donruss Elite Extra Edition #305 Kyle Waldrop [102/823] (auto)

And speaking of Quality Merchandise, there are more and more teams being added to my TRADE BAIT page, so take a look and make a trade offer!

Astronomical Random Friday 10

I found it interesting when Zune pulled up three straight tracks with a decidedly astronomical feel to them.  Then I found it less interesting when I noticed that shuffle had been disabled and it was playing tracks in alphabetical order, so I eventually turned shuffle back on, but continued with the theme:

  1. Alien Hip Hop” – Planet X, Quantum
  2. “Alien Earth” – Synergy, The Jupiter Effect
  3. All About Satellites and Spaceships” – Seven Percent Solution, All About Satellites and Spaceships
  4. “All Around the World or Myth of Fingerprints” – Paul Simon, Graceland
  5. “All of the Above: Full Moon Rising/October Winds/Camouflaged in Blue/Half Alive/Undying Love/Full Moon Rising Reprise” – Transatlantic, SMPTe
  6. Edge of the World” – John Scott, Greystoke: Legend of Tarzan soundtrack
  7. “Oh Brother” – James Taylor, New Moon Shine
  8. The Great Gig in the Sky” – Pink Floyd, The Dark Side of the Moon
  9. Under the Moon” – Camel, Harbour of Tears
  10. “Ride of Your Life” – Rick Wakeman, Return to the Centre of the Earth

Have an out-of-this-world weekend, and happy Father’s Day!

Interleague And Interdivisional Trades

I got to hear my name on the radio last night for the first time this season with the correct answer emailed in for the Twins’ trivia question of the game.
Q: Which former Twins players have had uniform number three on the Royals?
A: Harmon Killebrew, Steve Braun

I contacted Jeff at 2 by 3 Heroes about a trade, and he found a nice variety of Twins cards from my wantlists in exchange for a wide assortment of White Sox cards. It seems that my trades between the AL Central rival collectors have been the smoothest, and I certainly look forward to dealing with Jeff again in the future. Sometime, though, I need to show Jeff what a gold card from 2005 Topps looks like 😉

clockwise, from top left: 2012 Topps Heritage SP #470 Ben Revere; 2005 Topps Opening Day Target Exclusive #38 Torii Hunter (jersey); 2003 Upper Deck #519 Lew Ford; 2010 Topps Walmart Black #102 Minnesota Twins

A second trade was with PadresFan86 who’s a member at Sports Card Arena. He had several Tier One Blue cards for trade, and I had a couple Tony Gwynn Topps Sterling cards to trade. He threw in a couple cards, including the impressive s#’d Walker card below.

clockwise, from top left: 2011 Topps Tier One Blue #28 Bert Blyleven [057/199]; 2011 Topps Tier One Blue #97 Joe Mauer [058/199]; 1998 Pinnacle Plus Artist Proof Gold #AP27 Todd Walker [073/100]

Thanks for the trade, guys!

A Pair Of Deuces – Deal Me In!

With some more Braves cards from my trade bait page, I was able to snag these cards from clarkesk82 at Sports Card Arena:

clockwise, from top left: 2009 Topps Chrome Refractor #240 Brian Duensing [012/499] (auto); 2009 Topps Chrome #240 Brian Duensing (auto); 2011 Topps Gypsy Queen Target Green Frame #31 Joe Mauer; 2011 Bowman Platinum Gold #59 Justin Morneau

Nice timing; “Dunce” got the win in last night’s ballgame. Thanks for the trade!

Building Up The Portfolio

I decided to hit up eBay for some reasonably priced items to build up my havelist of GU, AU, and printing plates, and it happens to include a couple of the new toast of the Mets, Johan Santana.

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s…acctingman69, from Sports Card Freaks. He threw a post on a forum there mentioning he had several eBay listings, and checking them out I found one with five Twins cards, three of which I needed. I made a reasonable max bid and let it go, and ended up taking it home. acctingman69 was also nice enough to throw in a Black Diamond card that I needed too, which is very much appreciated.

clockwise, from top left: 2001 Upper Deck Heroes of Baseball #B-KP Kirby Puckett (bat); 2004 Upper Deck Etchings #BE-HU Torii Hunter [013/250] (bat); 2004 Donruss World Series #WS-105 Johan Santana [019/250] (jersey); 1999 Upper Deck Black Diamond #107 Eric Milton [0689/2500]

And from a couple of other eBay purchases:
